By the approval of Congress on May 3, 1935, the coining of these souvenir half dollars was done for the exposition. This coin was designed by Robert Aitken. The 1935 issue was struck at the San Francisco Mint, and the 1936 (under Recoinage Act of May 6, 1936) was at the Denver Mint.
